Baking Aroma Beads

Baking Aroma Beads

Did you know that you can bake aroma beads to create hanging scented decorations?

The shapes can be fragranced and used as a scented decoration or room/car scenter.  They are easy to do.

Ingredients/equipment

equipmentAbout 20g aroma beads per shape
Metal / heat proof cooke cutters
Baking parchment
Baking sheet
Oven
Shallow dish
Skewer
About 5ml fragrance per shape (less / more is fine)

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 170C / 325F / Gas Mark 3

ready_for_bakingPlace the baking parchment on the baking sheet.  Place the cookie cutters on the sheet and add a layer of aroma beads inside each cutter.  Jiggle the cookie cutter gently to ensure the beads have filled every nook and cranny.

The thicker the layer of beads, the thicker the final shape.

Carefully place the baking sheet with the cookie cutters and beads into the oven.

Leave for about 15 minutes depending on whether you want a smooth finish or textured finish.

The smooth finish takes a little longer.

after_bakingRemove from the oven and allow the shapes to cool a little before peeling them away from the cutter.  Use the skewer to create a hole in the shape.

This is easier to do this while the shape is still warm and pliable.

Flatten the shape if it bends whilst making the hole.

soakingPlace the shapes into a shallow dish and pour the fragrance onto the shape.  Leave for at least 24 hours to allow the shape to soak up the aroma.

After at least 24 hours, remove the shape from the dish (discard any excess fragrance oil or reuse for another aroma bead shape).

Dab dry with a piece of kitchen paper.

hangingThread a ribbon through the hole and hang.

The aroma should last for a few week.  It can be topped up by repeating the soaking in fragrance oil for 24 hours step.
