The Apprentice makes soap, a mess and a costly mistake

We've been glued to The Apprentice this week as not only have the teams been making and selling their own soap, but one of the teams raided a beehive to extract honey!

*Squeaks of delight* My lovely husband gave me a beehive and accessories for Christmas and I am currently undertaking a bee keeping course.  I can't wait until I can harvest our own honey and beeswax for use in cosmetic products.

Rest assured, I shan't add as much honey as the Apprentice team did - theirs was positively oozing and dripping and probably unusable as a washing bar!

However, adding too much honey didn't end up being a problem for them as that team won.  Adding too much sandalwood became the problem.....

Rose Candles anyone?

Why should adding too much Sandalwood be a problem?  The amount they used was well within the skin safe levels, the aroma would have been divine......no, the problem was all down to cost.

Had they added Cedarwood, as I believe they had originally planned, the cost of the essential oil would have been in the region of £70.  But no, Sandalwood it was, resulting in a cost of over £700 for the essential oil alone!  This meant that although they sold out of their lovely soap, the didn't make a profit whereas the dripping honey soap did.

I shuddered and recalled a student who recently added a 10ml bottle of my rose otto oil to a candle.  The size of the candle would have quite happily taken the 10mls and burned nicely (and very fragrantly) but my poor old heart still misses a beat when I realised...the cost of the rose oil was just over £60 - in one candle!!

Quick, pass me the lavender...deep breaths...deep breaths!

Here our review of Plush Folly & The Apprentice on BBC Radio Solent this week.  It'll take a few seconds to load.  And yes, I mention the rose oil in the candle.......

Just like buses.....

Having already been very excited with The Apprentice and BBC Radio, we were delighted when *plop* onto our doorstep landed this month's edition of Quick & Crafty magazine.

There is an interesting feature on making your own cosmetics and guess who has a page to themselves....here's a sneaky preview  ....
